Last Farmers Market | Palma de Mallorca
Last Farmers Market | Palma de Mallorca
At Palma’s Mercat de l’Olivar sits El darrer vestit ample — The Last Wide-Legged Suit — a sculpture by Tomás Vila depicting an elderly Mallorcan farmer.
The market was once a meeting point between Palma and the surrounding countryside, where farmers arrived each day with their produce. The old man represents a generation that resisted abandoning its traditional dress as Mallorca moved rapidly towards modernity during the 1950s.
Today he remains seated outside the market, watching a city — and an island — that has continued to transform around him.
Last Farmers Market captures him partly in shadow, caught between the Mallorca that was and the Mallorca that followed. For me, the photograph isn't simply of a sculpture. It is about memory, disappearing traditions and the traces of ordinary lives that remain within a changing city.
